Community college adjuncts strike union deal

The new union representing adjunct faculty at the seven-campus Maine Community College system inked its first contract Wednesday with college officials.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the union also includes two other groups of campus workers, but for the first time outlines employment terms for the system’s nearly 1,000 adjunct faculty members. The paper reported adjunct instructors typically earn between $1,500 and $2,500 per course, depending on various factors.

Overall, the contract represents a cost of around $1.26 million over three years, the paper reported. The contract provides an 8% raise over three years and a 2% retroactive payment to instructors who taught at least one course in the 2012-13 academic year and the 2013 fall semester.
