Composite mfg. furloughs 50

The global slowdown is being blamed for the furlough of 50 employees at composite manufacturer Owens Corning in Brunswick.

Owens Corning, based in Toledo, Ohio, acquired the facility, originally known as Brunswick Technologies Inc., in 2007. A spokesman said it will furlough half of its Brunswick work force effective today, leaving 50 production workers out of work for at least the month of March, according to the Times Record.

The Brunswick facility, which employs 98 people, primarily manufactures products for the wind energy market, including glass fiber for wind blades. It also supplies marine and medical markets. Since the fourth quarter of 2008, Owens Corning has announced furloughs and "production curtailments" at seven of the company's 40 facilities worldwide, the paper reported.
