Conservation commish to run for guv

Patrick McGowan has stepped down as conservation commissioner in order to throw his hat into the race for governor.

McGowan is formally announcing his candidacy as a Democrat today at locations in Fort Kent, Bangor and Portland, according to a press release. A former Maine representative, McGowan was appointed commissioner of the Department of Conservation in 2003, and prior to that served as regional administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration for seven years, according to the Morning Sentinel. He ran for the 2nd District seat in the House in 1990 and 1992, losing both times to Olympia Snowe, now a U.S. senator.

Gov. John Baldacci yesterday swore in Elizabeth Townsend, deputy commissioner of the conservation department, as acting commissioner, according to a release from the governor's office. She will be nominated for a permanent post in the next legislative session.
