Construction woes force Dragon Products shutdown

Dragon Products Co. will temporarily idle its Thomaston plant and furlough an unspecified number of workers later this month.

The plant, which produces cement and mines limestone, will shut down for four to six weeks starting May 25, according to VillageSoup. Ray DeGrass, the plant's manager, told the news website the number and length of layoffs of its 100-person staff had not yet been determined and would vary depending on demand. The company, which is owned by South Carolina-based Giant Cement Co., attributed the shutdown and furloughs to the downturn in the construction industry. In January, Dragon permanently laid off 20% of its work force.

Dragon Products' facility in Thomaston is the only cement manufacturer in New England, and has 10 locations in Maine, including Portland, Biddeford and Madawaska, according to its website.
