Courtney takes Calder in 1st District race
Senate Majority Leader Jon Courtney has been declared the winner of the Republican primary in the 1st Congressional District by just 265 votes. Opponent Patrick Calder of Portland conceded the race to Courtney yesterday afternoon.
The final tally was 14,547 for Courtney and 14,282 for Calder, according to the Portland Press Herald. Despite the close race, Calder said he won't seek a recount. Courtney lives in Springvale and runs three dry-cleaning businesses. He will face Democrat incumbent Chellie Pingree in November's election. For more primary news, click here.
In other election news, former Gov. Angus King, who's running for Olympia Snowe's U.S. Senate seat, said he would reject campaign funding from super-PACs if his party opponents would do so as well, according to the Bangor Daily News. But both Democrat Cynthia Dill and Republican Charlie Summers chastised King's proposal -- Dill said it "lacks...substance," while Summers called it a "distraction." King said spending by out-of-state PACs "[distorts] our political process."
