Critics: Halt seaweed harvest

Activists are seeking a moratorium on the commercial harvesting of a type of seaweed in Cobscook Bay until studies can determine the practice's effects on the overall health of the bay.

Concerned residents on Cobscook Bay claim the aggressive harvesting of rockweed has a detrimental impact on marine life in the bay. Rockweed harvesters have to report their yield at the end of the season and must cut the rockweed at a certain height. Acadian Seaplants of Nova Scotia, which has harvested rockweed in Cobscook Bay since 2001, says plenty of studies have already been done on the harvesting of rockweed and denies that its activities are harmful, according to the AP.

In 2007, Maine's rockweed harvest yielded nearly 7.5 million pounds and was valued at $298,887, according to the AP.
