DCP Midstream drops Searsport tank plan

DCP Midstream will withdraw its application for a controversial 22-million gallon-liquid propane storage tank in Searsport.

The Portland Press Herald reported a company spokeswoman said Tuesday that preliminary votes last week indicated that local officials would ultimately reject a permit for the $40 million project that has been the subject of prolonged public hearings and national media attention.

The company had received approval from state and federal regulators through years of work to build its proposed storage tank in Searsport, but the local planning board held the final approval the project needed.

Votes early last week indicated the planning board felt the project did not meet certain local zoning ordinances. In recent weeks, opponents had also stepped up efforts to stop the tank project with a letter of intent to sue the Army Corps of Engineers for granting the project a permit.
