Decades-old Bath business to file bankruptcy

An 86-year-old appliance business in Bath that abruptly closed last month is planning to file for bankruptcy, possibly leaving dozens of customers without refunds.

The Bangor Daily News reported that a lawyer retained by the owners of Gediman’s Appliance, which also closed its store in Lewiston without notice, told the Maine Attorney General’s Office that Peter and Serene Gagnon of Poland intend to file for bankruptcy, though it’s currently unclear whether the business plans to dissolve or reorganize.

Martha Currier of the attorney’s general Consumer Protection Division told around 40 customers in a letter Tuesday that they may not be able to get a refund from Gediman’s because secured creditors would be first in line to receive any uncollected debt.
