Dock workers return to negotiations

The longshoremen's union that approved a strike if terms of a container shipping contract are not met have returned to the negotiating table to hash out details of a pact to replace the existing agreement set to expire Oct. 1, according to Bloomberg News.

The potential for a strike has led some Maine retailers to consider alternative plans for container shipments, including routing deliveries through ports on the West Coast. Carolyn Beem, a spokeswoman for the Freeport retailer L.L.Bean told the Bangor Daily News in late August that her company was looking at contingency plans for container shipments.

Bloomberg reported that negotiations between the International Longshoremen's Association, which represents dock workers at 14 East Coast ports, including Portland's, and the U.S. Maritime Alliance will continue next week with federal authorities from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service on hand.
