Dollar stores proliferate in Maine

Rural Maine is awash in dollar stores.

The Ellsworth American reports that Hancock County is about to get its fifth dollar store, and rural Maine will likely see more such stores open up.

Thanks in part to the recession, the number of dollar stores in the United States — Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar — now exceeds CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens combined, Bloomberg reported in October. Dollar stores are opening at a rate of five a day in the United States.

Hancock County’s next will be a Family Dollar in Blue Hill, due to open spring 2018.

The town of Sullivan recently became home to the area’s first Dollar General.
