Down East business pays back wages

A sea urchin processor in Lubec has agreed to pay employees more than $26,000 in overtime back wages as a result of an investigation by the federal government.

ISF Trading Co. will pay 26 employees $26,420 total in overtime back wages after a investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor found the company didn't pay its employees time-and-a-half when they worked for more than 40 hours per week, according to a press release from the labor department. The company also didn't pay them for all hours worked as recorded on time cards and incorrectly treated them as independent contractors. The back wages cover the period between Oct. 14, 2007, and Feb. 23, 2008.

Because this is not the Lubec company's first violation of the Fair Labor Standard Act, the labor department also assessed a $11,594 civil money penalty.
