Down East community college names interim president

William Cassidy, who served as president of Washington County Community College in Calais from 2003 to 2009, will once again step into that role. He's been named interim president, taking over when Joyce Hedlund retires on June 30.

The Maine Community College System Board of Trustees hopes to name a permanent president by the end of the summer, according to a press release. Cassidy, who retired from WCCC as president in 2009, begins as interim leader July 1. Hedlund announced her retirement in February.

Hedlund spent 25 years in Maine's community college system. She became president of WCCC in 2010 following a 16-year stint as head of Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor. In her retirement, she plans to travel around the United States with her husband, a retired Bangor High School teacher, and pursue hobbies in art.
