Down East transmission line approved

Maine utility regulators have approved a $68 million transmission project in the Down East region.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission yesterday unanimously approved construction of a 42-mile-long transmission line between Ellsworth and Harrington, according to a press release from the PUC. The 115,000-volt line, known as the Downeast Reliability Program, will be built along railroad line and a new trail corridor, and will be operated by Bangor Hydro Electric Co. Since the project has been approved by ISO New England, which operates the bulk power grid, the $67.9 million project will be funded by ratepayers in all six New England states. About $1.8 million is expected to be paid by Maine customers.

Adding a second transmission line in the area will prevent power loss and could accommodate the development of renewable energy, Bangor Hydro officials told the Bangor Daily News. Construction is expected to start in early 2011 and wrap up in 18 months.
