Downeaster extension work set to start

Work on a $35 million Downeaster rail line expansion project from Portland to Brunswick could begin as soon as this week after the state reached a grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.

"This rail service will be a critical tool as the region develops new economic drivers in the wake of the naval station's closure," said Pingree in a press release.

Maine officials in January learned the state had received the federal economic stimulus grant, which will help fund an extension of the Amtrak Downeaster rail service from Portland to Brunswick, with a stop in Freeport. The project includes rehabilitating over 26 miles of existing rail line, constructing two disabled-accessible passenger platforms and improving 36 highway crossings.
