Ex-nonprofit worker pleads guilty to embezzlement

A former employee of CEI, formerly known as Coastal Enterprises Inc., has pleaded guilty to tax fraud and embezzling more than $300,000 from the nonprofit financial institution.

Stacey Backman, of Brunswick, a former fund accountant at CEI, faces up to 13 years in prison and $350,000 in fines for federal tax fraud and federal program fraud, U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II announced Monday. She will be sentenced at a later date.

Between 2010 and 2014, Backman embezzled more than $300,000 from CEI, which receives more than $10,000 in federal funds each year, and failed to report the embezzled income in her federal income tax returns, according to court documents. She was terminated in January 2014 after CEI learned of the embezzlement.
