Ex-state rep. gets jail time for theft, forgery
Former Alfred state Rep. David Burns was sentenced yesterday to six months in jail for misusing Clean Election funds. York County Superior Court Justice Paul Fritzsche sentenced Burns to 364 days in jail with all but six months suspended for three counts of forgery and three counts of theft, all misdemeanors, according to a press release from Maine Attorney General William Schneider.
Burns, who pleaded guilty to the charges, was also given one year administrative release following his jail sentence. He must also pay $2,384 in restitution. He was indicted in February for diverting more than $1,000 in public campaign funds for personal expenses and then filing false reports. He resigned as a state representative in January.
In December, the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices found Burns responsible for seven civil violations of the use of Clean Election funds, including transferring public money to his personal account and using it for personal expenses. He was ordered to repay $3,000 in improperly spent money and also faced a fine.
