Facing population decline, Oxbow residents vote to disband town

By a vote of 38 to 1, residents of the town of Oxbow Plantation voted in favor of a town “deorganization” plan that has been in the works for over two years.

Now, if everything moves ahead as planned, the Bangor Daily News reported that Oxbow Plantation will be known as Township 9, Range 6, on July 1, 2017. The town now has to liquidate its properties, withdrawal from Maine School Administrative District 32 in Ashland and pay off a $52,000 debt — its portion of a debt from a consolidated school complex.

“We’re running right out of people,” Steve Sherman, a tree farmer and the town’s first assessor, told the BDN. “It gets hard to find people to fill the town offices and there’s really very little that we have much say of anyway. People are on fixed incomes, taxes are getting pretty bad and it seemed like it was time to go in that direction.”
