FairPoint proposal pushes on

A vote on FairPoint's plans to purchase Verizon's northern New England landlines appears imminent in Maine after stakeholders moved forward on settlement deliberations yesterday.

State utility regulators gave Verizon and FairPoint Communications until 5 p.m. today to file amended agreements to resolve outstanding technical issues, according to the Portland Press Herald. If they meet the deadline, the Maine Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to vote on the agreement, which includes reducing the sale price to lighten FairPoint's debt load, on Dec. 26. The PUC is likely to vote on the sale itself next month.

FairPoint and the Office of the Public Advocate said Thursday's progress means the PUC is more likely to approve the sale, which is also pending in New Hampshire and Vermont. New Hampshire's PUC recently decided to delay its vote on the sale until Maine is done deliberating, as N.H. intends to press for most or all of the same concessions, the paper reported.
