Feds fund ME container ship design

A federal grant could help the Maine Port Authority restore regular container cargo operations.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced Monday that the MPA received a $150,000 grant to pay for design work on a new type of container vessel, called an articulated tug-barge.

John Henshaw, executive director of the Maine Port Authority, said in a press release that the design could bring container service to many ports along the East Coast, including restoring container service between Portland and the ports of New York and New Jersey.

Pingree said that type of ship would cost between one half and one third of a traditional container ship and would use fewer crew members.

The MPA plans to partner with a private company to design and build a vessel with the new design.
