Feds offer County wind power grants

The federal government has awarded $50,000 to the Maine Public Utilities Commission to support the development of small wind power-related businesses in Aroostook County.

The PUC will use the funds, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program, to provide technical assistance and training to Aroostook County businesses in the wind power industry, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. This project is expected to create 16 jobs in the county.

"Maine is well positioned to be a leader in the development of wind power, and this investment will help boost economic growth in Aroostook County," Sens. Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement.
