Finalists for USM president revealed

The University of Maine System has narrowed the list for a new University of Southern Maine president to four candidates, none of which hail from Maine.

The new president will replace Richard Pattenaude, who left the post last summer to become chancellor of the University of Maine System. The new president will begin in July, shouldering the job of overseeing a university that this fiscal year reported a $2.6 million budget deficit.

The finalists are two women and two men who all hold posts as administrators at colleges or universities in Arkansas, New York or Massachusetts. According to the Portland Press Herald, many of the candidates describe their abilities to raise money and rein in spending in letters they wrote to the search committee.
