Finance chief, veteran statesman to retire in May

Sawin Millett, the state finance commissioner who came out of retirement in 2011 to help manage the state’s books, announced that he plans to retire at the end of May.

The Bangor Daily News reported Millett wrote that he plans to spend more time with his family and on his farm in Waterford, where he was born.

Millett has spent 55 years working in government at the local, state and federal levels in Maine, starting in 1963 as a selectman in Dixmont. From 1969-72 and 2002-10, he served in the Maine House of Representatives and previously served in the administrations of governors Angus King, James Longley, Joseph Brennan and John McKernan.
