Former antique auto showroom up for bid

An iconic Ellsworth building on Route 1A that had been an antique car dealership for decades will be sold at a foreclosure auction later this month.

The Bangor Daily News reported the former Moto Car dealership’s 4-acre parcel at 444 Bangor Road will be open to bidders at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20. Bidders must pay a $20,000 deposit to enter the auction — the deposit is nonrefundable for the winning bidder.

The assessed value of the 6,340 square-foot building is $220,000, according to the city of Ellsworth. A total of $8,385 is owed in back property taxes from 2013 and 2014.

The building was built in 1923, bought in 1975 by its last owner, Terrence Pinkham, and “extensively remodeled and expanded over the years,” the owner told the BDN.

“I spent thousands of hours building that building,” he said. “I put my life into it.”

Pinkham said the old building is a “landmark” and an “icon.” He said the building went into foreclosure after his lender couldn’t wait any longer to delay his repayment schedule, though he is still in business with antique cars, including a 1955 Thunderbird, on display at a nearby lot.

According to Keenan Auction Co, which is holding the auction, the building “contains a custom-designed owner’s living quarters with sunken living room, many built-ins, exotic wood trim and flooring, telephone booth, fire pole and cupolas.”

It is being auctioned off as a mostly empty building with no vehicles included.
