Former MaineToday CEO named in complaint

Former MaineToday Media CEO Richard Connor has been named a defendant in a bankruptcy proceeding for Brown Publishing Co. Liquidating Trust. The complaint claims Connor and others owe Brown Publishing $52,500 for money improperly received.

Connor and his wife, Deborah, and Texas-based law firm Kelly Hart and Hallman LLP are named as defendants in documents filed April 29 in U.S Bankruptcy Court in New York, according to the Portland Press Herald. The liquidating trust says the defendants improperly received the funds from Ohio-based Brown Publishing between January and April 2010. There were no details provided on how the money was received or its alleged use.

According to The Times Leader, Connor in September 2007 sold the Fort Worth Business Press, which he owned since 2001, to Brown Publishing Co. In 2010, Connor and his wife repurchased the publication from Ohio Community Media LLC, which bought Brown's publishing assets that year during a bankruptcy sale, according to a press release. Connor bought MaineToday, which owns the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel, in 2009 and resigned as CEO last year.

In related news, another company Connor previously owned was ordered by a Pennsylvania court to pay the former owner of Katahdin Paper Co. more than $212,000 for unpaid paper. A lawsuit filed by Katahdin alleged Wilkes-Barre Publishing, which owns The Times Leader, ordered 840 tons of paper that was delivered but was not paid for as of July 2011. A current Wilkes-Barre executive attributed the nonpayment issue to the company's leadership at the time, which included Connor.
