Foster care program to end, leaving 42 jobless
Social services program Casey Family Services, which has offices in Portland and Bangor, will close, resulting in more than 40 layoffs. The program provides foster care services throughout Maine.
The Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation yesterday said it will close Casey Family Services' offices nationwide as part of the nonprofit's move away from providing direct foster and child welfare services, according to a press release. Founded in 1976, Casey Family Services, headquartered in New Haven, Conn., provides foster care services to 400 children under state contracts in Maryland, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The foundation will transition current families to other providers by the end of the year, and provide the 280 total affected employees with help finding new jobs. Forty-two people in Maine will lose their jobs and 90 children will be affected, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Foundation President and CEO Patrick McCarthy said in the release that, by developing a new grantmaking strategy to help nonprofit human services agencies improve their services instead of operating its own foster care agency, the foundation will serve thousands of families.
