Four airlines compete to serve rural airports

The U.S. Department of Transportation has received four proposals from airlines to replace Colgan Air as the carrier for the Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle and the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton.

Air Choice One, Peninsula Airways and Sovereign Air submitted bids to operate service to and from Bar Harbor and Presque Isle, while Cape Air submitted a bid to service Bar Harbor only, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, ranking member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. Colgan Air in September announced that it would petition the DOT to end its service between the airports and Boston and Plattsburg, N.Y., as part of a strategic move to reduce service at the Boston hub.

In December, Alaska-based Peninsula Airways announced its intention to bid for the service. Massachusetts-based Cape Air services Maine's other two Essential Air Service airports in Augusta and Rockland. The EAS program provides federal subsidies to air carriers that service rural airports. Sovereign Air is based in Orlando, and Air Choice One is based in St. Louis.
