Gardiner firm appeals lottery contract loss

A company in Gardiner is appealing the state gambling bureau's decision to award its lottery system contract to a foreign competitor.

Scientific Games, which is based in Georgia and New York, found out earlier this month that the state Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages & Lottery Operations decided to give the contract to operate the state's gaming system to Athens, Greece-based Intralot Inc., which will handle the contract out of its Vermont data center, according to the Kennebec Journal. Daniel Walker, an attorney for Scientific Games, filed the appeal with the state Bureau of Purchasing, claiming the decision will move 12 tech jobs out of the state, and asked the Maine State Lottery Commission to address the matter. Both companies submitted proposals to operate the lottery system, and Intralot's low bid was $2.2 million below that of Scientific Games, Walker told the paper.

Patrick Traub of Scientific Games told the paper that the contract will give Vermont $5.5 million in wages to the detriment of Maine. But Intralot spokesman Mark Robinson told the paper that the company "is bringing 20 jobs to Kennebec County" and that "Intralot's winning bid could therefore result in a net gain in jobs." He said Intralot's bid for the work will save Maine about $3.6 million over the contract's potential 10-year span.

The contract cannot officially be awarded to Intralot until the appeal process is complete, according to the paper.
