Gardiner seeks gas as MNG begins pipeline

Two companies competing for natural gas customers in the Kennebec Valley are looking to win over the city of Gardiner along with Augusta and other municipalities.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Gardiner will now seek a more specific timeline and price from Maine Natural Gas and Summit Natural Gas of Maine to provide natural gas service to the area.

The latest announcement follows both companies' attempts to land a similar municipal deal with the towns of Cumberland, Falmouth and Yarmouth, and to win a contract to provide state buildings in Augusta with natural gas service.

Late last month, the Cumberland tri-town group voiced preference for a bid by Summit, a recommendation they will now send to the state's Public Utilities Commission.

Both companies have state approval to expand natural gas service in the area and have been courting private sector clients while pursuing government contracts.

Maine Natural Gas on Wednesday announced it signed a contract with three companies to begin immediate construction of a 10.5-mile "backbone" pipeline to serve clients in the Augusta area.
