Geiger moving on at Bath Iron Works

Jeffrey Geiger, president of defense contractor Bath Iron Works, will move on to lead another General Dynamics company, Electric Boat, starting Nov. 4.

The company announced that Frederick Harris, president of General Dynamics’ NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, Calif., will also take on leadership of Bath Iron Works, according to a press release.

Geiger’s move to the Groton, Conn.-based Electric Boat follows the retirement of that company’s president, Kevin Poitras, who led that company for 40 years.

Geiger has led Bath Iron Works since 2009 after first joining the shipyard in 1984 as a production planner.

Michael J. Mulligan, president of General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, will remain a vice president of the corporation and will become vice president and general manager of Bath.

Shipbuilding industry analyst Jay Korman of The Avascent Group told the Bangor Daily News that the leadership change bodes well for both BIW and NASSCO and that both Geiger and Harris have good records within their respective General Dynamics companies.
