General Dynamics cos. lay off 80 more in Me., Vt.

Saco Operations, a part of General Dynamics, announced layoffs for 30 employees to begin in early October through January 2013.

A spokesman for the company told the Portland Press Herald that decreasing demand for its gun systems and the completion of a contract with the Army for "reactive armor" for military vehicles.

The company also announced 50 layoffs at a Vermont plant, which the Press Herald reported are the first reductions since 2004.

On Monday, Bath Iron Works, also a General Dynamics company, announced its plan to cut 88 workers in two phases through Oct. 5.

The employer is Saco's largest taxpayer and has, under its previous name of Saco Defense, operated in the city for around 60 years.
