Grants will expand rural Internet access

The ConnectME Authority yesterday awarded six grants totaling $1.75 million to expand high-speed Internet access in rural Maine.

Five of the six grants will allow four telecommunications businesses to expand high-speed Internet access to over 60 rural Maine communities in Washington, Piscataquis and Hancock counties, according to a press release from the authority. The companies are: Axiom Technologies in Machias, which received two grants; Cornerstone Communications in Charlestown; Mainely Wired in Swanville; and Redzone Wireless in Rockland. A sixth grant will go to the Franklin Community Health Network to build a fiber optic cable network that will connect three partnering medical centers and seven health care facilities in six towns across Franklin, Oxford, and Androscoggin counties.

The Legislature created the ConnectME Authority in 2006 to invest in telecommunications infrastructure in unserved or underserved areas of Maine.
