Great Northern Paper president resigns

The president of Great Northern Paper Co., the company that took ownership of the Katahdin Paper Co. mills in northern Maine, has resigned a week after making comments about Roxanne Quimby's proposed national park.

Company spokesman Scott Tranchemontagne said GNP "parted ways" with Peter Hanson because of "philosophical differences on how best to move the mill forward," according to the Bangor Daily News. Tranchemontagne said the decision was not connected to Hanson's remarks that Quimby's park plan would not threaten the paper industry. On Dec. 13, Hanson spoke at a Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce event, saying he felt Quimby's national park would not affect wood supply or otherwise negatively impact his industry, except for concerns over the application of federal air-quality standards. Two days later, GNP CEO Richard Cyr put out a statement saying the company did not support Quimby's proposal to donate 70,000 acres next to Baxter State Park to the federal government for a national park.

GNP's vice president of operations and manufacturing Everett O'Neill will replace Hanson, according to the paper. Portsmouth, N.H.-based Cate Street Capital in September bought the Millinocket and East Millinocket mills and has restarted operations at the East Millinocket facility, hiring back 215 workers.
