Greene company issues beef recall

More than 2,000 pounds of potentially contaminated ground and tenderized beef products are being recalled by Greene-based Town & Country Foods, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Wednesday.

According to the USDA, the Town & Country products being recalled include hamburger and stew beef sold from April 4-10. The USDA said there have been no reports of illness. The recall was issued after a routine lab test produced a positive result for E. coli, a dangerous bacteria. Very young people, seniors and people with weak immune systems are most susceptible. The product was shipped before the lab results were known, the USDA said.

FSIS spokesman Bill Bagley told the Portland Press Herald that the products were distributed to wholesalers and retailers, but a list was not immediately available. Ronald Grant, chairman of the Greene Board of Selectman, told the paper the company distributes mostly to small-scale grocers and local markets as far away as Rangeley.
