Hannaford switches to sustainable seafood

Hannaford Supermarkets yesterday announced that it has implemented a new policy that ensures the more than 2,500 seafood products it sells have been sustainably harvested. The Scarborough-based company said it’s the broadest sustainable seafood policy in the U.S. supermarket industry.

The policy includes fresh, frozen, canned and packaged seafood products, according to a press release from the company. Hannaford requires suppliers to demonstrate they are harvesting seafood from fisheries that are governed by effective, science-based management plans. It’s the first major supermarket chain to require this documentation for all seafood products.

Dozens of Hannaford suppliers have altered their harvesting practices, launched fisheries improvement projects and improved their documentation in order to comply with the policy, according to the release. If a supplier cannot document sustainable harvesting, the product is removed from stores. More than 50 products have been replaced.

Hannaford began work on its sustainability policy in 2009 and tapped Portland-based Gulf of Maine Research Institute to help draft the policy, which was released in 2010.

Hannaford operates 181 stores in the Northeast and has more than 26,000 employees.
