Holiday weekend traffic jumps 9%

Fourth of July weekend traffic on the Maine Turnpike jumped nearly 9% compared with last year, beating the turnpike authority's projected 7% increase.

Traffic at the York toll plaza from Friday, July 2 through Monday, July 5 increased 8.9% over last year, according to a press release from the Maine Turnpike Authority. More than 245,500 vehicle transactions were recorded at the plaza compared with just over 225,500 over the four-day weekend last year. Since July 4 falls on different days of the week, MTA compared this year's Friday through Monday traffic with last year's Thursday through Sunday traffic.

MTA attributed the jump to the weekend's hot weather and stable gas prices.
