Home sales, prices jump in June

Single-family home sales in Maine rose 6.4% in June compared with one year ago as the median sales prices of those homes also continue to rise.

According to data released Monday by the Maine Real Estate Information System, 1,327 single-family homes were sold in June, compared with 1,247 one year ago. Over the same period, the median sale price for those homes rose from $175,000 to $184,000.

The increases are due to the broader economic recovery and historically low interest rates, according to Maine Association of Realtors President Bart Stevens, but Maine still lags behind national growth figures.

The National Association of Realtors reported single-family home sales nationwide increased 14.5% from last June while the national median sale price rose 13.2%. In New England, the increases were 16.7% and 6.8%, respectively.
