House votes to ban ethanol in gas

Lawmakers in the House voted Wednesday to ban blending the corn-based additive ethanol in gasoline, if at least two other New England states do the same.

The Bangor Daily News reported the House voted 109-32 to give initial approval to a ban of ethanol blends. Most gasoline blends sold today contain 10% ethanol.

The bill follows a resolution passed last month that would ban gasoline that has more than 10% ethanol, a proposal also dependent on other New England states doing the same.

The Department of Environmental Protection drafted that bill in January, and opposes a new 15% ethanol blend known as E15. The American Automobile Association also opposes the blend, saying that fuel might void many car manufacturers' warranties.

Proponents of the ban, which requires another vote in the House and votes in the Senate, say ethanol has not helped the U.S. cut down on carbon pollution, is causing corn prices to spike and can be damaging to small engines and motors.
