HUD gives state $6M for housing work

Maine is receiving nearly $6 million in federal funds to renovate public housing around the state.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development yesterday announced more than $5.6 million will come to public housing authorities in the state to fund housing improvements, according to a press release. HUD's Capital Fund Program provides annual funding to all public housing authorities to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize the public housing in their communities, and money can be used to upgrade water and electrical systems to make them energy efficient. A total of 20 housing authorities stretching from Sanford to Bar Harbor and Presque Isle are receiving money, with the highest amount of $1.5 million headed to the Portland Housing Authority. The Bangor Housing Authority is also receiving nearly $1 million, and the Lewiston authority more than $500,000. The rest of the awards range from $400,000 to $22,000.

Earlier this month, HUD released a study that found the nation's 1.2 million public housing units are facing an estimated $25.6 billion in needed major repairs. The department is seeking $200 million in fiscal year 2012 to rehabilitate federally subsidized affordable housing, money expected to help it leverage $6.1 billion in private funds, according to the release.
