New hires

NewHeight Group, a real estate development firm in Portland, hired Tom Federle and Erin Cooperrider as development partners on its new project, Luminato Condominiums. Federle also runs his own law practice in Portland while Cooperrider is also development director at Community Housing of Maine.

BerryDunn, an accounting and consulting firm in Portland, announced several new hires. In audit and accounting the firm hired Jill Goldsworthy as staff accounting and Torrie Lalime as staff auditor; in government consulting Julie Blackwood, Catherine Corey and Rick Gamache were hired as senior consultants, Hannah May and Anthony Sylvia as consultants, Jamie Phillips as paraprofessional and Dacey Wesley as project coordinator; and in marketing Kevin Emmons was hired as database marketing administrator.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Lewiston, hired Taylor Asen as an attorney. Asen represents plaintiffs in personal injury cases, including motor vehicle and medical malpractice cases, and complex civil litigation matters.

SIS Bank in Sanford hired Karyn Scharf Morin as vice president, senior retail banker. Most recently, Morin was with Kennebunk Savings Bank.

Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice PA, a law firm in South Portland, hired Jacob Bowie as an attorney. Bowie focuses on the areas of real estate, estate planning, probate and business law.

Scarborough Land Trust hired Toby Jacobs as part-time stewardship coordinator. Jacobs holds a concurrent position as part-time stewardship and outreach coordinator at Presumpscot Regional Land Trust.

Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield hired Erica Mazzeo as academic dean. Mazzeo was previously curriculum director for Falmouth Public Schools.

H.M. Payson, a registered investment advisor and Maine trust company in Portland, hired Bridget Bailey. Bailey was previously a senior trust associate for the Key Private Bank Group in Portland.

Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington hired Christopher Renaud as a member of the hospital’s anesthesiology services. Renaud was staff anesthesiologist and medical director of anesthesiology services at Ireland Army Community Hospital in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Diversified Communications, an international media company in Portland, hired Meaghan Strickland as a marketing and conference administrator. Strickland was previously with Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Belfast Creative Coalition hired Emily Baer as executive director. Baer most recently created market access and professional development opportunities for Wabanaki artists across Maine in addition to serving as chief editor of Pine Pitch Press in Portland.

Bangor Savings Bank hired Susan Pope as vice president and commercial relationship manager in Ogunquit. Pope was previously a commercial lender for Key Bank and Kennebunk Savings Bank.

Bernstein Shur, a law firm in Portland, hired Alysia Melnick, former legal counsel and senior policy advisor to the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, to its legislative and political law practice group.

Drummond Woodsum, a law firm in Portland, hired Mark Franco as a shareholder and member of its trial services group.

USI Insurance Services LLC in South Portland hired Tim Forte as vice president of the Maine Operating Company’s commercial insurance practice. Forte was previously with Liberty Mutual.

MaineGeneral Pulmonary in Augusta hired Akshu Balwan as director for interventional pulmonary and Arun Ranganath as medical director of CCU.

Energy Circle, a digital marketing firm in Yarmouth, hired Conrad Birkett as web production associate, Alexis Garrison as a digital marketing account manager, Shannon Sinkin as associate digital marketing account manager and Anna Adamczyk as a content writer.

Promotions

PeoplesChoice Credit Union in Saco promoted Michelle Lavigne to assistant vice president of operations. Lavigne was previously the branch manager in Biddeford.

BerryDunn, an accounting and consulting firm in Portland, promoted Todd Desjardins to principal. Desjardins, a certified fraud examiner, has been with the firm for seven years, specializing in audit, accounting and consulting services to banks and credit unions.

Energy Circle, a digital marketing firm in Yarmouth, promoted Amelia Krahe to associate director of content marketing and Alison Romano to marketing manager. Krahe was previously content strategist while Romano was sales and marketing coordinator.

Katahdin Trust in Presque Isle promoted David Cambridge to senior vice president, commercial services officer and Kevin Plourde to senior vice president, credit administrator. Cambridge was regional vice president while Plourde was vice president, credit administrator.

Appointments

The Maine Bankers Association elected Jon Prescott as chairman and Andrew Silsby vice chairman. Prescott is president and CEO and a director of Katahdin Trust Co. and Katahdin Bankshares Corp. while Silsby is president and CEO of Kennebec Savings Bank. Others elected to the executive committee were: Paul Andersen, president, Androscoggin Bank; Curtis Simard, president, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust; Glenn Hutchinson, president, Bath Savings Institution; Daniel Thornton, president, People’s United Bank; Robert Quentin, president, Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution; Tony McKim, president, First National Bank; Robert Montgomery-Rice, president, Bangor Savings Bank; and Andrew Perry, president, First Federal Savings of Bath. Brad Paige, president, Kennebunk Savings, will serve on the committee as immediate past chairman.

United Way of Mid-Maine in Waterville announced Cheryl Flewelling of Kennebec Wealth Management was elected board chair and Hannah Bard, Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community Education; Holly Caron, Golden Pond Wealth Management; Ann Lindeman, Bangor Savings Bank; Wanda Steward, Kennebec Valley Community Action Program; and James Wood, United Insurance Tilton Agency, have joined its board.

Larry Robinson, center director at Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership in Augusta, was appointed to the Brand Council of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership. The Brand Council is an executive-level advisory board that provides oversight, guidance and strategic alignment with industry to identify the core values, competencies and aspirations of the national Manufacturing Extension Partnership brand.

The Susan L. Curtis Charitable Foundation in Portland and Camp Susan Curtis announced Jeanette Andonian, director of the school of social work at the University of Southern Maine; Benji Borowski, attorney with Preti Flaherty; Brian Deveaux, partner with Leaders LLC; Bob Nadeau, vice president, commercial lender with Bangor Savings Bank; and Jim Polewaczyk, corporate vice president and general manager for Idexx Laboratories, were elected trustees.

Preble Street, a homeless shelter in Portland, added Stephen Pryor, Jennifer Wilson and John Roberts to its board of directors. Pryor is the complex director at RBC Wealth Management in Portland, Wilson is the corporate merchant for the women’s apparel team at L.L.Bean and controller for the Forest Avenue Veterinary Hospital in Portland and Roberts is the retired president and CEO of Assurant Employee Benefits. In addition Herb Janick was elected board president. Janick is a partner at Sidley Austin LLP in Portland.

The American Heart Association in Maine appointed Catherine Desrochers, Linda Whitten, Nicole Hardy and Sarah Porter to its board of directors. Desrochers is an account executive with Norton Financial Services, Whitten is manager of human resources at AAA Northern New England, Hardy is general manager of Pottery Barn and Porter is project director with the University of New England Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition. In addition, Dave Abel, president and general manager of WMTW-TV in Portland, joined the eight-state founders affiliate regional board of directors for New England, New York and New Jersey.

Achievements

Tedford Housing, a nonprofit in Brunswick working to find solutions to end homelessness, announced its annual award winners. “The Tedford Home Award” was presented to Kelly Bumiller, a clinician at Tri-County Mental Health Services; Dawn Flagg, family educator at Midcoast Maine Community Action; and Tammy Cutchen, an Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine parent. Craig McEwen, Daniel B. Fayerweather professor of political economy and sociology emeritus at Bowdoin College, was named “The Scooty Brownell Award” winner. Sally Loving, a self-employed communications consultant for advocacy groups in Washington, D.C., and New York, won “The Margit Cook Award” for volunteer service.

The Maine Small Business Development Centers, a statewide program that helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses, said Roy Hebert received his Core Competencies Professional Certification from the New England Professional Development group. Hebert is a certified business advisor in Saco.

Greg Glynn received his accreditation in public relations through the Public Relations Society of America. Glynn is an account executive at Nancy Marshall Communications in Augusta.

Tree Spirits winery and distillery in Oakland received the 2016 Down East magazine “Editors’ Choice” award for best spirit for its absinthe verte.

Pierce Atwood, a law firm in Portland, was recognized by Chambers USA 2016 for trusts-and-estates practice in its inaugural edition of Chambers High Net Worth guide. The firm received a “Band 1” ranking for private wealth law in Maine with partners Molly Liddell and Barbara Wheaton recognized individually.

United Way of Mid-Maine in Waterville presented its The Spirit of Partnership Award to KVCAP - Poverty Action Coalition; The Spirit of Mid-Maine Award to Bill Primmerman, Somerset Public Health; Volunteer of the Year - Chester A. Baker Award to Rep. Tom Longstaff; Women’s Leadership to Ann Lindeman, Bangor Savings Bank; and Youth Leadership to Alexandria Brann, Messalonskee High School.

Shaheen & Gordon PA, a law firm in Saco, said that attorney Elizabeth Scheffee introduced Paulette Brown, president of the American Bar Association, at the Maine State Bar Association’s 2016 Summer Bar Conference. Scheffee, along with associate justice Andrew Mead of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and Elizabeth Stout of the Law Office of Elizabeth Stout in Portland, also presented a panel discussion on Limited-Scope Representation at the conference.

Verrill Dana, a law firm in Portland, announced that attorneys Kurt Klebe and Mary McQuillen were recognized in the inaugural Chambers High Net Worth guide, Chambers and Partners first publication specifically aimed at the international private wealth market. Klebe is a partner and chair of the firm’s Private Clients and Fiduciary Services Group while McQuillen is a partner who practices trusts and estates law. The firm was also recognized for its Private Clients and Fiduciary Services Group.

Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington was awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology. The gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. The hospital was also named among 2016’s Most Wired Hospitals for successfully using technology for a better patient experience.

Allen Insurance and Financial in Camden announced that Jo-Ann Neal and Jennifer Wadsworth completed the National Association of Health Insurance Underwriter’s Benefits Account Manager Certification Course. Both Neal and Wadsworth are account managers in the firm’s insured benefits division.

Rockland Main Street Inc., was designated as an accredited Main Street America program for meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main Street Center.

The MEMIC Group, a workers’ compensation specialist in Portland, awarded $15,000 in scholarships to three children of workers who suffered serious workplace injuries. Griffin Wade of Lewiston, Kelsey Jones of Hancock and Sadie Martinez Clavijo of Hartford, Conn., each received $5,000 toward their college ambitions.

The American Hospital Association’s Health Forum announced nine EMHS member hospitals were recognized as part of the Most Wired list that measures integration of technology for health care delivery. Awarded Healthcare’s Most Wired for 2016 include: Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Mercy Health System of Maine in Portland. Awarded Healthcare’s Most Improved for 2016 include: Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in Blue Hill, Charles A Dean Hospital in Greenville, Sebasticook Valley Health in Pittsfield and The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. Awarded Healthcare’s Most Wired for Small and Rural Organizations for 2016 was Inland Hospital in Waterville.

Cary Medical Center in Caribou was rated among the safest hospitals in the U.S. as one of only 98 hospitals out of more than 2,500 in the nation to earn the ‘A’ grade from the Leapfrog Group since the inception of the grading process.
