Jackson elected Maine Senate Democratic leader

Sen. Troy Jackson was elected Wednesday as majority leader for the state Senate, following on the resignation of Sen. Seth Goodall who was tapped to become the next regional administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The Associated Press reported Jackson, of Allagash, will move up from his previous position as assistant Senate Democratic leader, a position that will be filled by Sen. Anne Haskell, of Portland.

Jackson was recently the subject of personal criticism by Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who told reporters during a press conference that Jackson had a "black heart" and used a sexually vulgar phrase to characterize Jackson's record of public service.
