JAX to build $1B lab in Conn.

The Jackson Laboratory is partnering with the University of Connecticut to build a $1.1 billion lab at the university's health center in Farmington, Conn.

Officials from the Bar Harbor-based organization and the university are expected to formally announce the collaboration at a news conference today in Connecticut, according to The Associated Press. The project is expected to create 661 research jobs, as well as 842 construction jobs. Joyce Peterson, a spokeswoman for Jackson Lab, did not give specific details in advance of the conference but did say it would be a new operation, meaning lab employees would not be relocated from other facilities. The lab's plans to open new facilities in Florida fell through earlier this year.

Earlier this week, the National Institute of Health gave Jackson Lab a $25 million grant to fund its genetic information database.
