Jetport sets passenger record

While airports nationwide face declining passenger numbers, business is up at the Portland International Jetport thanks to the airport's two lost-cost carriers.

Monthly passenger numbers in August topped 200,000 for the first time in the jetport's history, an 8.7% increase from this time last year, according to the Portland Press Herald. Much of that growth has come from discount carriers JetBlue and AirTran Airways, which make up 28% of passenger seats.

Capacity at the jetport also is projected to increase 15% in November from the year before, with US Airways adding flights next month to Charlotte, N.C., New York City and Washington, D.C., according to the paper. Nationally, airport capacity is expected to decrease 9%.
