Jobless benefits end for 3,200 Mainers

More than 3,200 Mainers have lost unemployment insurance benefits because Congress has not acted to extend the aid for the long-term unemployed.

The Portland Press Herald reported the horizon for receiving benefits decreased from 73 weeks to 26 weeks on Saturday. The 26-week time frame leaves around 11,000 Maine residents in danger of losing unemployment benefits in the coming year, state officials told the paper. Nationally, around 1.3 million people lost extended unemployment benefits over the weekend.

During the height of the Great Recession, Congress extended benefits for up to 99 weeks, later drawing that extension down to 73 weeks. The paper reported that the counties with the greatest number of affected unemployment benefit recipients were Cumberland (551), York (417) and Penobscot (377).
