Jobless rate steady at 8%

Maine's unemployment rate held steady at 8% in June, illustrating a slow economic recovery, said Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman.

June's jobless rate was unchanged from May and down slightly from 8.2% last June, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Labor. The number of unemployed people was 55,600, a 2,300 drop from the same month last year. Advertised job postings in May and June also dipped after increasing for nine consecutive months, which, along with lagging private sector job growth and retail sales, signals a slow economic turnaround, Fortman said in the release.

The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5%, down slightly from 9.7% in May and unchanged from June 2009.
