King to caucus with Democrats

Meeting the expectations of political observers in state and from away, Maine's newly elected U.S. Sen. Angus King announced today that he will caucus with the Democratic Party.

King ended the speculation about which party caucus he would join at a press conference earlier today, according to the Bangor Daily News.

King previously skirted the announcement, leaving open his possibilities for caucusing with either party or avoiding alignment altogether.

King told reporters Wednesday that it had become clear that he would have to caucus with one of the major parties to secure committee assignments.

According to a history of the Senate's committee system, both political parties began submitting slates of members to fill the Senate's committee seats in 1846, what was then a new plan that "fostered development of Senate party conferences (Democrats informally use the designation "caucus")."

The Senate history of committee appointments continues, "Independents and members of third parties have received committee assignments through one or the other of the major party conferences."
