Lawsuit seeks $43M, accuses CMP of work delays

A leading contractor on Central Maine Power Co.'s $1.4 billion transmission reliability program says the utility owes it $43 million for work changes that it says caused costly delays.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Hawkeye LLC of Hauppauge, N.Y., filed its complaint recently in U.S. District Court in Portland, alleging that CMP failed to deliver the wood and steel poles for the project as scheduled.

The company's lawsuit requests a judgment against CMP for an amount to be determined at trial, but it estimates the delays cost the contractor at least $43 million. The lawsuit also says Hawkeye has a contractual right to stop working at the point its unpaid costs for time and material exceed 1% of the contract price.

Mike Collier, director of investor relations for Hawkeye's parent company, the Houston-based Willbros Group, said the company remains on the job and plans to finish its work by year's end.

CMP spokesman John Carroll told the paper the company is now preparing to answer the claim.
