LePage takes heat for ‘Gestapo’ comment

Maine Democrats are calling on Gov. Paul LePage to apologize for his characterization of the Internal Revenue Service as the “new Gestapo” during his weekly radio address Saturday blasting the Affordable Care Act, which narrowly survived a legal challenge by Maine and 25 other states when it was upheld last month in a 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.

“We the people have been told there is no choice,” LePage said during his address. “You must buy health insurance or pay the new Gestapo – the IRS.”

The Portland Press Herald reports that Maine Democratic Party Chairman Ben Grant is demanding a “full apology” from LePage “on behalf of all those who suffered at the hands of the real Gestapo.”
