Limestone company's $19M contract could create jobs

The Maine Military Authority, an equipment refurbisher at Limestone’s former air base, has lined up a $19 million contract with the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the contract, once finalized, would have the company repair buses for the transit authority. It is one of the two contracts being sought by the company. MMA and trade officials are currently seeking to secure another railcar manufacturing contract with Chinese company Norinco.

Timothy McCabe, director of business development for the MMA, told the newspaper that the bus repair contract would help it retain 60 existing jobs and potentially create more. Huge Corbett, the MMA's executive director, said the contract is part of the company's effort to expand into the bus refurbishment market.

Gov. Paul LePage said in a statement that there is an option to increase the MMA's contract to $24 million if additional work is needed, according to the BDN.

The MMA has previously experienced financial difficulties through past contract reductions, leading to widespread company layoffs.
