Log home co. nets China deal

Oakfield-based Katahdin Cedar Log Homes has signed a deal with Chinese resort developers to build a 10,000-square-foot lodge and single-family homes in Chengdu, China. The deal means a 30% jump in the company's revenues for next year.

Katahdin bested a dozen other log home companies to build the development for Chinese real estate company Syswin Inc., according to a company press release. The lodge will be manufactured and shipped to China early next year, after which Katahdin will construct a series of homes around a man-made lake in Chengdu. Representatives from the company visited Maine, and Katahdin officials went to China before the deal was inked. The development will be managed by Chengdu Cultural and Tourism Development Group LLC.

Founded in 1973, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes is one of the largest log home manufacturers in the country and is the largest processor of Northern White Cedar in the world. The parent company, Katahdin Forest Products, also operates Katahdin Cedar Fencing and Cedar Ideas, a garden accessories company. Katahdin Forest Products has more than 80 employees.
