Machias hospital cuts staff, hours

Down East Community Hospital in Machias is planning to cut staff positions and hours in order to shave $1 million from its budget.

The 25-bed hospital will cut four full-time non-physician positions and leave a handful of others unfilled, as well as reduce hours for an undetermined number of staff members, according to the Bangor Daily News. Interim CEO Doug Jones said the cuts will stabilize the hospital's finances. The cuts come six months after the hospital was placed under the control of Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems following investigations into its clinical and administrative practices.

Last month, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services cleared the hospital to continue receiving Medicare payments, after the agency said in July it would cut off payments due to deficiencies.
